Gaia GPS Lite - Offline Topo Maps, Compass, and GPS Tracking for Trails – Hiking, Biking, Skiing, Camping, Running

Gaia GPS Lite - Offline Topo Maps, Compass, and GPS Tracking for Trails – Hiking, Biking, Skiing, Camping, Running

Description

Off-trail, road-tripping, or wandering abroad? Use Gaia GPS to navigate anywhere you aren't connected.

Gaia GPS is a full-featured outdoor GPS app, developed by Anna and Andrew. We wander around with our dogs and like to pitch our tent wherever Gaia leads us. Please email us with questions, bug reports, feature ideas, and other feedback at gaia@gaiagps.com.

The lite version has three differences from the paid version:

• The lite app includes ads and an Upgrade tab.

• The paid app can import GPX files.

• The paid app includes a Map Store where you can get additional free and paid map sources, such as snowmobile trails, Florida satellite imagery, and more.

Gaia lets you:

• Download maps for times when you don't have an internet connection.

• View topographic and road maps. Use MyTopo maps in the US/Canada, and Cloudmade topo and road maps all over the world.

• Record tracks, waypoints, and take geo-tagged photos.

• Search for nearby waypoints and reports about places.

• Import and export GPX files, by email or to EveryTrail.com.

• Customize all aspects of Gaia, including units, coordinates types, color and sound, and more.

►► IMPORTANT - IPOD TOUCH AND NON-GPS IPHONES This application will not be fully functional on these devices. The GPS Recorder and compass will be inactive. You will be able to view maps and waypoints, but you cannot record tracks.

►► GPS WARNING - Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

What's New in Version 4.4

* totally got rid of the bottom ad on the map

* got rid of all download/tracking restrictions on iOS 3.x - app is now fully ad-supported

* fixed many bugs and made tons of improvements - Gaia Lite now has all the power and latest improvements to Gaia GPS

* added a tab to tell you about the great reasons to upgrade

* did some other ad-related stuff

Battery drain is dependent on other apps - Gaia will do over 6 hours of tracking

:
I am one of the devs and I want to respond to the review left by -bjd-. Three specific points:

1) The app will get over 6 hours of battery life, while tracking in the background, and much more if you aren't recording a track. However, if you have apps that use push notifications turned on, that could severely hurt your battery usage. To get the absolute best battery life, make sure to turn off wi-fi, or even remove your SIM card. But Push apps are the real killer, according to our beta testing group, and you can read the discussions about this on our Google Groups forum, linked from gaiagps.com.

2) If you flip the switch to Off on the Trip screen, then the app won't run the GPS or consume resources while backgrounded. This is easily verifiable because the GPS arrow disappears.

3) I think our app uses battery as well or better than all of the competing apps. I would urge anyone whose tests say otherwise to post their results as a review. If anyone can demonstrate better performance in another app, we will replicate your experiment and continue this work.

Battery Killer

:
I won't get into the pro's and con's otherwise noted by previous reviewers, but one thing that has not been noted is the severe battery drain when following a trip. I'm not sure how much Gaia is at fault of if it's simply that the iPhone (4) is not optimized as a GPS device for laying down a course.

I began a 1.5 hour hike with my battery at 89% and ended at 58%. That's a huge draw. Also, the app seems to continue to draw on the battery after track following has been turned off and the app has been closed. The only way to 'break' the link to the GPS is to reboot the iPhone.
With all that said, having off-line topo maps is nice. But, I would never use this for a multi-day trip where battery life was essential for emergency communication. This is where a dedicated GPS comes in. The battery life quirk is enough to prevent me from buying the full version.

Oh, and to the reviewer who blasted the company for the ads in the free version... This is a perfectly reasonable solution for a FREE app. If one otherwise loves an app, then paying a small fee for the ad-free version should be an easy decision. To blast the developers for taking this approach is unfair. They could just as easily offered a severely neutered version or worse, offered only the pay version and then you'd be left with buyer's remorse and a complicated refund system if it did not meet with your approval.

If/when they fix the battery life issue, I'd be happy to pay for the full version. For now, I'll use the off-line maps in the free version and keep the trip-following feature turned off.

Update 1-4-11

Based on the response by andrewljohnson, I spent some time testing the app's effect on battery life.

Each test began with a fully charged iPhone 4 with the meter reading 100%.

There was a ~20% drop in battery life over 1.5 hours of use while running with the "New Track" switched to "On". No adjustments were made to any settings in any other application that might have push notifications.

With the "New Track" switched to "Off", battery drain was ~5% for 1.5 hours. Again, this test was performed with a fully charged phone.

With the iPhone 4 rebooted and the app turned off and no other active use i.e. phone, data etc. other than any apps with push notifications, battery drain was >1% for 1.5 hours.

It took me ~4 minutes to type this update. During that time, I had the phone sitting still on my desk with the app running and "New Track" switched to "On". The battery meter went from 100% to 97%.

Works great and works offline

:
This has been great for me. Works well offline except for driving directions which requires network. For hiking or boating, etc. good without network. Maps are generally accurate except for minor details. The ad is not in my way. I appreciate the full functionality.

The buttons should be larger or easier to use. The estimated time enroute does not make sense at driving speeds. Lacks a compass display page, but does give digital heading and course-up or North-up map display options.
